Reasonable Gun Talk on the Stephanie Miller Show
On April 15th, Republican Richard from Chicago, called in to talk about guns. Richard, who is a Republican who recently ran a race there, sounds so reasonable for a moment, and I’m glad to hear that. He mentions disagreements with the NRA which many pro-gun people have (and that he’s demonized when he has them) and the need for some form of control even shown by the NRA’s own actions or rules at any shooting range.
But “this is where we get off” into him not telling the truth. He still insists Obama has a bad gun record and would come for your guns, which is a complete lie. He also insists people are crazy for using the term “assault rifle,” which is the most common way to try to make herp-a-derp out of people who don’t want bullets in their kids. No, we have a euphamism: “Modern sporting rifle.” Somehow that makes it all okay.
Dean Obeidallah of SiriusXM radio points out that gun bans never once ended up in confiscation because those who had purchased them previously had their rights “grandfathered in,” which is again a great point about how ridiculous the paranoia about “gun-grabbing” really is.
They point out the NRA’s now using the same tired lying and scaring technique against Hillary that they did against Obama, and their entire rally was nothing but an anti-Hillary event.
Jim in Detroit calls in as Carlos Alazraqui (also known as Deputy James Garcia from Reno 911) is in the studio. He has a new idea for how we should refer to the NRA… it’s no longer representing gun safety and rights. It’s representing gun lobbyists who want profits. We should call them, “Gun Industry Lobbying Group NRA.”
Look, all I’m saying is that we can’t even have a sensible conversation BECAUSE the gun people won’t let it happen. If it’s not obfuscation and bastardization of the entire issue, ironically from a magazine that ironically calls itself Reason, it’s constantly insulting and demonizing people trying to have it. All the insanity on this issue is coming from the gun people, NOT the gun control people, but that doesn’t stop them from character assaults on people trying to have the conversation, and that has to stop.
The 2nd Amendment does NOT say all people can have any gun they want any time they want. It’s never said that. SCOTUS was wrong. The five Republicans on there have been so pro-corporate that it’s no surprise they’d take the NRA’s pro-profit stance. But there’s nothing unconstitutional about trying to create a reasonable control method. Nothing at all.
It’s just that we can’t even reach reasonable if we can’t even have the conversation, which is just what La Pierre and the crazies want. When you attack people and call them stupid just because they saw their kids filled with bullets and they want to stop that from happening so damned often, that shows me where the reason is NOT. And they’re succeeding at making sure this conversation can’t happen. No, there’s no gun-grabbing going on, so there’s no need for all this paranoia. But there IS an epidemic of gun violence and there is no logical reason to tell people to just suck it up and accept it, especially when we know the NRA rally and shooting ranges across the country don’t allow it to happen there.
Cue a bunch of people trying to herp-a-derp everything I just said, because I know you’re going to do it. You just can’t not be dicks about it, and that’s the problem.
