I’ve said, repeatedly, that telling someone their name is not real enough is a potentially racist and bigoted policy. My last name is RedSpider. Period. No, I’m not a wannabe Indian and it is not meant as any such name. It was given to me and became me for no reason other than it is who I simply am. I will use it because I needed a new name on here to avoid use of the one I was born with, and the abusive people who gave it to me. I do not need them finding me. I need as few triggers of my PTSD as possible while I’m trying to heal from the diagnosis I finally received after decades of not knowing.
I do, however, know many people with Sister names, Craft names, names that they use to remain unrecognized from work and from families and abusive exes. When Facebook forces them to use the ‘real name’ Facebook is saying their name isn’t white enough, and that they don’t care about their safety or community.
When Facebook apologized, we thought this was over. But they changed nothing. That was a publicity stunt pure and simple. So I finally sent them my ID and said, this is what you wanted, but do not use this name. And immediately they put that name on my profile. They even acknowledged that they’d read what I said, but put it on there anyway. And put me at risk. And I am outraged. I had to immediately delete that account. I lost touch with several people as a result. And they stopped answering my email to them about it.
Facebook, you are the internet’s Hitler.
You are an abusive dictator of the web. We should’ve never let you have this much control, but you have it, and you misuse it. And I absolutely despise you for the harm you’re doing.
From the Protest’s FB page:
Thousands of Facebook users are being maliciously targeted, reported and their accounts suspended for having a “fake” name. The anonymous reporting process is heavily flawed and has potential to do great harm.

The FAKE NAME option is obsolete.
The FAKE NAME option punishes identity, not behavior.
The FAKE NAME option is irrelevant. You already have all your basis covered for reporting bad actors.
The FAKE NAME issue does not create anonymity. People are authentically behaving and taking responsiblity for their profiles and their persona.
The FAKE NAME issue does not create a safe user environment. As the policy and reporting procedure stand, it is creating an environment of malicious targeted bullying. Our community is disappearing and you are allowing it to happen.
The FAKE NAME issue is particularly harmful to members of the trans community, many of whom do not have a government issued ID that reflects their authentic identity. When exposed, trans men and women are often the victims of discrimination, bullying, harassment, and violence.
The FAKE NAME issue does not just affect LGBT people. It is a worldwide problem that demands your immediate attention. It is time to reevaluate Zuckerberg’s original concept of Facebook. It’s 2015 and identity is as fluid as the users themselves.
The FAKE NAME issue is irrelevant thanks to the built-in functionality of Facebook itself.
If you think I’m using a fake name – BLOCK ME.
If you don’t like the way I look – BLOCK ME.
If you don’t like what you think I represent – BLOCK ME.
If someone offers you a friend request and you think they are using a fake name – BLOCK THEM.
Blocking is more effective than reporting. When you block someone they immediately disappear from your Facebook experience.
STOP DEMANDING ID TO VERIFY USERS’ IDENTITY. Many users do not have government issued identification, credit cards, or a piece of paper that reflects their true authentic identity.
Dress in your most fabulous form of authentic self-expression. Bring signs, noise makers, bull horns, and your friends! Remember our hashtag #MyNameIs.
Stay tuned for a list of diverse speakers, including folks from the trans community, domestic violence survivors, Native Americans, LGBT activists, politicians and other allies.
In the meantime, there has also been a petition started to get FB banned from the NYC and SF Pride Parades due to their unfair and discriminatory policies. More about that here:
