This was written and posted by my Facebook friend, and it was so damned right and so damned good, I had to share the fuck out of it:
As gay people, those who opposed us having equality in society and equality under the law sought to criminalize us, sought to marginalize us, sought to pathologize us, sought to deny us the right to self-determination. They stated we were unfit to teach or mentor children. They stated we were neither psychologically fit enough nor trustworthy enough to work in government service. They stated we were a threat to national security and military cohesion so that we were unfit for military service. They said we were morally or medically unfit and so denied non-citizen gay people entry in the US. They stated we were perverts, deviants and suffered from psychological disorders so that we were unfit to be foster parents and unfit to adopt children. They’ve stated that they are morally superior and so we were to be denied marriage.
As a result, many fit gay people were denied the opportunity to teach or mentor children. Many gay people avoided government service jobs or served in those jobs while under fear of discovery. Many gay people were unable to serve in the military, or served and were discovered and were expelled from service (14,000 under DADT, Thanks Bill Clinton!) or served under fear of discovery. Many gay people were denied entry into the US, or sought to immigrate and had to live in fear of discovery. Many gay people were denied the opportunity to foster children or adopt.
Many gay couples had to form and maintain relationships without the protections that marriage provided their heterosexual counterparts – that heterosexual married people took for granted.
Slowly those who have sought to criminalize us, sought to marginalize us, sought to pathologize us and sought to deny us the right to self determination have lost.
Now, on the verge of losing when it comes to marriage, they worry they will be demonized.
Indeed, if those of us who were forced to live under criminalization, under marginalization, who were forced to be thought of as sick, deviants, perverted and denied basic self-determination, the right and dignity to decide for ourselves how to live, who lived under fear of discovery, under fear of violence, if we have any say, they will indeed be demonized in history.
They will be demonized not for thinking that marriage was between one man and one woman, but for denying us the dignity and right to construct our own lives for ourselves. They will be demonized for making us live in fear, in shame, in fear of discovery and in fear of violence.
Indeed, these decisions – can gay people teach and mentor children? Can gay people work in government service? Can gay people serve in the military? Can gay people foster and adopt children? Can gay people marry? These decisions are about our future.
The future of people who would construct lives for themselves as they see fit versus those who would see us criminalized, marginalized, pathologized and take from us the right to build our own lives as we see fit.
Those of you who have sought to see us criminalized, marginalized, pathologized and take from us the right to build our own lives as we see fit, who have made us live in fear of discovery, in shame and in fear of violence, you are our enemy and the enemy of good people everywhere. You are indeed the demons you wanted others to believe we are. And good people around the world are waking up, seeing through your vale of lies and seeing you for who you really are, sick, evil twisted human beings trying to victimize and vilify others for who they are.
To that, I must add this…
