And Idiocracy is when we let the dumbest people have the most powerful votes over other people. But that’s what could happen.
Dan Savage hosts the controversial, yet acclaimed sex advice podcast, The Savage Love Podcast, but episode 449 begins with some unexpected material that he finds more important. More important than Dennis Hastert’s scandal, or Bruce becoming Caitlyn (although good for her), or whatever stupid stuff came out of Sarah Palin’s mouth today.
No, he wants to talk about Evenwel v. Abbott, which, if the Republican majority of the Supreme Court wants to, can destroy the 1 person 1 vote way our democracy works. And it is very important. Please, give him a listen:
He’s not the only one talking about it. The Upshot at the New York Times did an article about it as well. Otherwise, I’ve heard nothing about this until today. But you should know. And it should worry you:
Last week, the Supreme Court agreed to hear the case, Evenwel v. Abbott. It’s about whether voting districts need to have equal populations (as they do today), or whether they need to have equal numbers of eligible voters: adults who are citizens and who haven’t been disenfranchised as a result of imprisonment of felony convictions.
Equal population districts have been taken for granted; every state draws its districts in this way, and it was surprising to see the court even consider the question. But it’s a system that has been an advantage for Democrats for a long time. If the court requires that districts have equal numbers of eligible voters, it will make the elections of representatives to Congress even more biased toward Republicans.
Think of it as the ultimate gerrymandering of the country. And be afraid.
