And it’s not because it’s a gay flag. It’s because of what the gay flag originally stood for.
Now that we’ve finally admitted flags wear out their usefulness, and that the Confederate Treason flag should come down, how about we admit we’ve changed flags many times and that our current incarnation is outdated.
The Old Glory has 13 stripes which stand for the original colonies. We now have 50 states and several territories and places that need to be recognized but have not been, meaning that we own them but they aren’t allowed to vote. Which is absurd.
It has 50 stars, which we’ve changed many times as we added states. We can add some more as we grant statehood. Or maybe put something better there that represents us more than a bunch of pentagrams in a supposedly Christian country (I’m serious, you people have pentagrams on your flag!)… but then, I’m cool with pentagrams. Maybe one big one or something. (Watch Christians reading this now scream we need to change them all into crosses or something).
But mostly, that rainbow. Rainbows mean all colors, all kinds, the entire spectrum of light. You can even read the bullshit Noah thing into it if you want. I’m okay with that. But to me, that’s what America is actually about. Not a melting pot. But a place where all can be exactly who and what they want to be. Yes, I’ll give up the rainbow being solely the gay flag for this. I’m okay with that. Because it was always meant this way.
But here’s the deal. For once we have to be these things. We’ve never been a nation of actual equality. We’ve never been one for actual justice. We’ve been a nation of genocide, gentrification, gender-insistence, bigotry, inequality, oligarchy, and global destruction.
You know, on second thought, if this country could stop doing that shit, I won’t care what our flag is. I really won’t. It’s a symbol. It’s the actions that need to change.
Until then, I’ll fly the New Glory flag as seen above. Because that’s my flag.
